Canada May Provide $6 Billion for GM, Chrysler, Globe Says

The Canadian and Ontario governments are in talks with the U.S. Treasury and automotive executives to provide as much as $6 billion in bankruptcy financing to General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, the Globe and Mail reported. Canada would provide as much as 15 percent of the $40 billion fund, which would help the two automakers through the initial phases of protection from creditors, the Globe said, citing unidentified people. The talks are in “final stages,” the paper said.

Chrysler debtholder talks pick up pace; GM stalled

The pace of negotiations between Chrysler LLC and its debtholders picked up this week, but talks at General Motors Corp. have slowed as both companies face looming government deadlines to cut their debt in order to stay out of bankruptcy. Banks and other Chrysler creditors that hold $6.9 billion in secured debt are preparing a counteroffer after they rejected a proposal from the automaker and the government to erase the loans for $1 billion, according to a person briefed on the negotiations.

Automakers riding high until recent collapse: Study

WINDSOR, Ont. — A study by the Canadian Auto Workers shows that Canada’s three automakers were successful financially almost every year for the past 35 years until a gradual and ultimately marked loss of market share brought the industry to the brink of collapse as recently as last year. The study, to be released Monday, estimates that profits generated by General Motors Canada and Chrysler Canada reached $37 billion between 1972 and 2007.

Chinese automakers meet Buddhadeb

Chinese auto major First Automobile Works (FAW) officials on Monday met West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and discussed proposals for setting up an automobile manufacturing facility in the state. "The FAW officials had come. They earlier visited Haldia and spoke to their Indian partners. They are studying the possibilities. They will give us concrete proposals," state Industry Secretary Sabyasachi Sen told reporters here. FAW has teamed up with Ural India, an Indo-Russian joint venture, and is scouting for 600 acres for setting up a facility

South Korea unveils plan for automakers

Seoul, South Korea — South Korea has finalized plans to support its troubled auto industry, highlighted by a massive tax cut and financial support, despite criticism over a lack of self-rescue restructuring efforts by carmakers. Under the massive package, the government will provide tax incentives to consumers who trade their old cars in for new ones to boost sagging demand and reduce pollution emissions, according to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, formerly the Ministry of Commerce, Energy and Industry.
